Hello, my name is Marshall Dennert and my first teaching experience was at Lake Preston School District where I taught Middle and High School Computers and a business class. Hello, I am Lisa Dresch and I teach High School art in SIoux Falls. I have been teaching 3 decades and still learning myself. I look forward to learning more in this book study as I thought it sounded like a great resource for the classroom.
My name is Amanda Neville, and I am a School Counselor at Brookings High School. Our high school serves students in grades 9 through 12 and has right around twelve hundred students. I have been a School Counselor for twenty-one years, and this is my fourteenth year here at Brookings High School. It has been a place where I have grown right alongside the students I work with, and I am grateful for the chance to support so many different personalities and paths. I truly enjoy being part of the academic, personal, and social-emotional pieces of a student’s journey. No two days look the same, and that is something I appreciate. It keeps me learning, listening, and connecting in ways that feel meaningful. Outside of work, I value my time with family more than anything. The simple moments tend to be the ones that matter most. I try to stay present for them because, as the saying goes, the days are long but the years are short. The older everyone gets, the more I find that to be true.

As author Julia Cameron points out in The Artist’s Way, “In order to do something well, we must first be willing to do it badly.” And as the authors of this book say, “Rookie mistakes lead to growth and mastery.” Describe a rookie mistake you’ve made as a teacher and the growth you experienced as a result. (This is an exercise in laying your inner Joker to rest.) In addition, please leave encouraging comments on at least two other participants’ posts.
Tatiana Lingos-Webb in her TED talk, “Proven Steps To A Better Classroom", describes how she uses dance to teach life skills. How do you teach life skills such as grit and resilience?
Corey Poirier, in his TED talk, “How People Crush Fears And Expand Comfort Zones”, discusses his personal experiences. How do you (or how do you plan to) overcome your personal fears and expand your comfort zone in the classroom? …outside of the classroom? Again, please leave encouraging comments on at least two other participants’ posts.
